Creating a Dispense Exercise: Creating Prescriptions

Create the prescription

The prescription is at the heart of every MyDispense exercise. It identifies all of the key components within the exercise, such as medicine, patient, prescriber etc. Even emergency supply exercises have a prescription, which is hidden from the students.

Select the appropriate Prescription Type from the dropdown list.

The prescription options will vary depending on your Prescription Type.

Set the Prescription Date Offset. The date on the prescription will be calculated with the offset you enter into this field. For example, -5 will subtract five days from the date.

After selecting a Prescription Type the prescription preview panel will display your prescription.

Select a handwriting Font. This is optional and is used for prescriptions that need to be handwritten.

Enabling Voicemail stops the prescription from appearing to students in the exercise and requires them to complete the exercise using a Voicemail message e.g. such as when receiving a telephone order from a prescriber.

Select the prescriber. Once a prescriber has been selected, their details are shown in the prescription panel.

You can search for Prescribers via the the Name and Suburb text boxes, you can also filter using the Prescriber Type drop down list.

Select a Patient to add to the prescription.

You can search for patients via the Name, Sex and age fields displayed at the top of the Select Patient panel.

Once a patient has been selected their details are shown in the prescription panel.

Fill out the Patient Introduction which appears at the start of the exercise. It’s used to introduce the patient request/problem.

Give your patient a photo by clicking the Select the Patient image.

To help find your patient image you can filter via Sex, Age, bodyshape and Region.

Add Patient Notes and Feedback if required.

The patient notes displayed in the dispensing application can be ‘pre-loaded’ using this feature.

Add Dispensing Records if required.

Add a Medication to the Prescription by clicking on the “Add medication” button. Which will bring up the select medication for prescription window.

You can search for medications by generic and brand name. Results can be filtered by location (shelf, fridge, safe), controlled-drug status and drug form. There are just over 1000 drugs in the MyDispense database including over 40 controlled drugs.

Fill in the fields on the New medication for prescription form

Click the Save button on the new medication for prescription panel to save the medicine data.

Repeat the above process if you wish to add more medicines to the prescription.

Note: Some prescription types will not allow multiple items and that the maximum number of dispensable items on a prescription is three.

Once you have finished adding your medicine(s) you can now publish your simple exercise. Publishing the exercise requires that you complete the exercise checklist, which is updated each time you attempt to publish an exercise.
